Breastfeeding in public has become a large issue in today’s society. There are arguments against allowing women to do so as it is indecent, doesn’t consider others (e.g. children) or is just plain disgusting. However these arguments have been countered by others saying it is natural; breasts are not sexual objects and should be allowed to be used for their purpose, the right to bodily autonomy and so on. The matter is unsolved and doesn’t seem to be reaching a conclusion soon. So I will ask you the question: should public breastfeeding be allowed?

I like the topic and the debate.
Looking at this from an Islamic point of view, I would say that public breastfeeding isn’t part of our principles. We are taught to be modest and cover ourselves up. So how is it that we can show our body publicly?
This Quranic verse clearly portrays of how we are meant to observe pardah and be modest as well as, who we should observe pardah infront of.
“[24:32] And say to the believing women that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts, and that they disclose not their natural and artificial beauty except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head-coverings over their bosoms, and that they disclose not their beauty save to their husbands, or to their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands or their sons or the sons of their husbands or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or what their right hands possess, or such of male attendants as have no sexual appetite, or young children who have no knowledge of the hidden parts of women.”
I believe, this is very self explanatory as why it would be inappropriate to publicly breast feed without somehow covering yourself.

In my most humble opinion I think that public breast-feeding can be done without showing any private parts. It isn’t uncommon for mothers to breastfeed their child while covering their whole body. It is essential though to cover your body, when you go out public, you wouldn’t want to be sexualised which is unfortunately what happens when any gender shows off for a particular sex-appeal. Due to that the person is not seen soley as a person anymore for the opposite gender.
As a Muslim, I generally do hijab which helps me to keep a pure form and feeling free as well.
Now I also believe that the general responsibility of a mother and her first priority is to make sure her baby is fit and healthy before leaving the house. By no means should the mothers think they will be able to breastfeed outside before leaving the house and not do it at home , generally if breastfeeding in public can be avoided, then it should be avoided as it is still not comfortable for many and the mothers themselves.
However once the mothers in public see their child to be very hungry, it would be cruel not to give their child the food it needs and letting the child suffer. Breastfeeding should be done for the child’s sake.
