Narcolepsy (Part 3)

… leading on from the previous two articles where narcolepsy and its causes were discussed.

So let’s further dig into this sleeping disorder and find out the treatments available for narcolepsy.

In this article, I will only mention the  non-pharmacological treatments – things one can easily incorporate into their daily routine or even make it their daily routine.

Now, you might be wondering why I said: ‘… make it their daily routine’ – this is because their whole sleeping pattern would need to be adjusted in order to attain the rest that their body needs.

Non-pharmacological treatments for narcoleptics:
1. Going to bed on  time – make a proper plan and routine.

(Gellatly, April 13th 2015)

2. Sleeping for a scheduled amount of time so one doesn’t feel too tired or over sleep which will upset the sleep routine.

(Agarwal., 2014)

3. Avoid smoking (especially at night-time), drinking alcohol and coffee or caffeine-containing beverages for a few hours before going to sleep. Improve your diet and monitoring it so avoid large, heavy meals before sleeping.

4. Exercise for minimum 20 minutes per day at least 4 or 5 hours before going to sleep as this also improves sleep quality and helps with excess weight gain problems.

    1. There are some natural remedies to help with some of the symptoms such as cataplexy, where one can suffer from cramps. If you would like, I could write an article on that as well.
